Bangladesh v Ireland ICC World Cup 2011 Match Report
Defending a modest total of 205 all out, the Tigers were made to sweat as Ireland chased bravely but ultimately were bowled out for 178 with Shafiul Islam claiming four for 21.

Shafiul’s figures were the best World Cup return by a Bangladeshi bowler, and he was ably supported by the Tigers’ spinners who were expertly rotated by captain Shakib Al Hasan.

It was a must-win game for the home side after their opening disappointment against India on Saturday, and the capacity crowd at the Shere Bangla National Stadium were made to sweat after the Tigers, having won the toss, were shackled by a disciplined Irish bowling display.

Tamim Iqbal and Imrul Kayes fired the Tigers off an aggressive start - the pair reached the fifty mark as early as the sixth over - but then the momentum swung dramatically after Niall O’Brien’s inspirational work behind the stumps. John Mooney slid a delivery wide down the leg side and, with Kayes overbalancing, O’Brien whipped off the bails in a flash to make the initial breakthrough.

Junaid Siddique was run out shortly afterwards and then Andre Botha got into the act for Ireland, the medium pacer claiming the massive wickets of Tamim (44) and Bangladeshi skipper Shakib al-Hasan (16) to reduce the hosts to 86 for four.

With the Tigers in trouble Mushfiqur Rahim and Raqibul Hasan set about rebuilding the innings in a restrained partnership of 61 for the fifth wicket. The pair were given nothing loose from the Irish with young left-arm spinner George Dockrell particularly impressive. The 18-year was miserly before picking up the wickets of Rahim (36) and Mohammad Ashraful, both to rash strokes, as he ended with figures of 2 for 23 in ten overs.

The Bangladeshi innings stuttered along to the close with Hasan run out for 38, and the only other worthy contribution coming from number eight Naeem Islam (29). Andre Botha returned towards the latter part of the innings to claim his third wicket in figures of 3 for 32, while Trent Johnson’s variety yielded two for 40, as Bangladesh were bowled out in 49.2 overs.

In response Ireland simply lost wickets too regularly to mount a successful chase, despite promising innings from both O’Brein brothers.

Abdur Razzak was successfully used with the new ball as the first Irish wicket - that of Paul Sterling - also fell to a stumping. Shakib dismissed William Porterfield with his first ball and when Mohammad Ashraful claimed the vital wicket of Ed Joyce Ireland were 75 with three - still with enough time for victory but in need of a significant innings to get them home.

Niall O’Brien was solid in his knock of 38 from 52 balls, starting brightly before being worn down by the Bangladeshi spinners, he eventually was caught off the bowling of Shakib (2 for 28). Kevin O’Brien threatened with his powerful strokeplay, but he became Shafiul’s first victim after a fluent 37 off 40 deliveries. It was a key moment in the game and the decision to bring back his fast bowler proved a masterstroke by Tigers skipper Shakib.

Shafiul’s pace and accuracy was too much for the Irish tail and he finished off the innings by taking four of the last five wickets as Ireland were bowled out with five of their overs to spare.
